Oxythyrea funesta – ‘deadly oxythyrea’

This beetle or the roze chafer family with an evocative Latin name, alas, made its appearance in our garden only in the last two years the size of a small fingernail; it is virtually invisible because entrenched in the depth of the newly opened rose. Only when the lovely fresh flower begins wilting prematurely does one wonder what’s the matter, but then it’s already too late, exactly as  described in the Blake poem15William Blake was an English poet, painter and printmaker. Largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. poignantly set to music by Benjamin Britten16Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was an English composer, conductor and pianist. He was a central figure of 20th-century British classical music, with a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. Cf : Benjamin Britten, a shrub rose of a luminous deep red-pink, discovered en 1992 and marketed in 2001 by David Austin, a specialized rose grower, date from which it carries the name of the British composer. Délicious, intensely fruity fragrance with hints of wine and acidulated drops. :

Poem O Rose
O Rose, thou art sick,
The invisible worm
That flies in the night
In the howling storm
Has found out thy bed of crimson joy
And his dark secret love
Dose thy life destroy.
