T<\/span>he other day I was reminded that conflict is anywhere <\/span>in life as a matter of logic, in all relationships, even in <\/span>friendship. I told Mme El who looked concerned. I had, <\/span>however, noticed that she is quite capable of making snide <\/span>remarks. She certainly speaks to me in a way she wouldn\u2019t <\/span>dare to her daughter-in-law: authoritarian, if not dictatorial, <\/span>rough, bordering on rude. I take it in without taking any harm, <\/span>knowing how it is meant. So she did look concerned when I <\/span>told her that even in friendship\u2026<\/span>
And then she went a step too far. Against my express wishes <\/span>she told L\u00e9onine that my mother was \u2018morte\u2019, dead. I heard <\/span>this from L\u00e9onine herself who thought Mme El was imagining.<\/span>
The surprise when she heard that it was true! And I hadn\u2019t <\/span>told her! I explained that I didn\u2019t want to make a fuss about <\/span>the event and that was it. No more was said.<\/span>
But next day I called Mme El to task. She put on a robust <\/span>defence with a determined face: she thought L\u00e9onine should <\/span>know, and no, it wasn\u2019t only my business, she had a right to <\/span>say it, too!<\/span>
Why did she do it, I wondered to myself? A wish to assert <\/span>herself? Let L\u00e9onine know that for once she was better <\/span>informed? A kind of triumph? At my expense!<\/span>
I didn\u2019t try to find out and Mme El grew grumpy, telling me <\/span>harshly to stop brushing her hair, she had asked me to do it, and <\/span>no doubt saw annoyance on my face. She was uncomfortable.<\/span>
